South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of late U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, to serve as the state’s interim senator through the remainder of his term.

The appointment follows the death of Graham, who died Saturday at the age of 71 while campaigning for reelection.

Appointment

McMaster announced the appointment Monday during a news conference at the South Carolina Statehouse.

Nordone will serve in the Senate until Jan. 3, completing the remainder of her brother’s current term.

Speaking after the announcement, Nordone said she was honored to continue her brother’s public service.

“It is such a privilege to get to finish some of his important work, and I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina,” she said.

Graham’s Death

Lindsey Graham died unexpectedly on Saturday at age 71.

According to preliminary findings from the Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia, the cause of death was an aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Graham had represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades and was seeking another six-year term at the time of his death.

Support

President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Nordone’s appointment before it was announced.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said he recommended her to Gov. McMaster, calling the appointment “a fabulous tribute” to Graham.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott also voiced support, saying Nordone understood her brother’s commitment to the state and the country.

Background

Nordone has served since 2019 as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.

She has also worked with Clemson University, the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, and the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Election

Although Nordone will temporarily fill the Senate seat, South Carolina law requires a special Republican primary on Aug. 11 to select the party’s nominee for the November general election.

The Republican nominee will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the general election.

Several Republican leaders have been mentioned as possible candidates, including U.S. Reps. Nancy Mace, Ralph Norman, William Timmons, Russell Fry, and Joe Wilson. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette has also been discussed as a potential candidate.

Political analysts currently rate the race as strongly favoring Republicans.

Next Steps

Nordone is expected to be sworn into the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.

Her appointment ensures South Carolina maintains full representation in the Senate while voters prepare to elect a senator to serve the next full term.
