A throng of supporters joined Nancy Barba at a Culver City neighbor’s home on Sunday, March 16th to kick-off her well-received campaign for City Council.

Addressing one hundred supporters, Barba shared her inspiring vision for a sustainable Culver
City, including her commitment to bold policies that will transform the city into a walkable and
bikeable community, with equitable access to mass transit for everyone who lives, works,
studies, visits, plays, and passes through Culver City.

Nancy Barba is a mom, a wife, and a first-generation Latina who believes in building consensus
to solve problems. She is a climate leader, a housing advocate, and an equity champion who
has dedicated herself to improving life in Culver City for all.

Barba’s passion, energy, and focus impressed the crowd at the launch event, while the crowd’s
enthusiasm impressed her. Afterwards, she expressed gratitude for the encouragement of her
many supporters, and for the breadth and diversity of the gathering. “One of my favorite parts
was that I had people there from all walks of life,” Barba said. “It felt amazing to experience so
much support from friends and colleagues, from middle school to the present.”

At the launch event, Barba spoke movingly about her grandparents, aunts, and uncles, who
were, “…braceros, or migrant workers, that traveled from Jalisco, Mexico to areas across the
United States, picking oranges, cotton, and even doing a stint in mining. I grew up with my mom
and siblings and was bussed from South Central LA to Sherman Oaks as part of the school
district’s desegregation efforts. My single mom, with only an elementary school education, did
her best for me and my three siblings with her seamstress’ income.”

Speakers at the event also featured Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin, Culver City
School Board Vice President Triston Ezidore, former Culver City Housing & Homelessness
Advisory Committee Vice Chair Bubba Fish, Master of Ceremonies and volunteer with Palms
Unhoused Mutual Aid (PUMA) Sebastian Hernández, and closing remarks from local housing
advocates Dorien Davies and Kenny Stevenson–who all gave their heartfelt endorsement for
the candidate.

“I am a founder of Culver City for More Homes, a grassroots group of Culver City residents and
stakeholders devoted to making housing more plentiful, affordable, and equitable for everyone,”
Barba told her supporters. “As a City Planning Commissioner, I have worked to respond to the
homelessness crisis by creating more opportunities for housing, addressing homelessness, and
delivering much needed results for the community.”

Nancy Barba has an extensive history of volunteering and public service. She was a Culver City
Finance Advisory Committee Member from 2018 to 2020, a Culver City Pride Ride and Rally
Steering Committee Member, a Rancho Higuera Neighborhood Association Board Member, a
former President of the MOMS Club of Culver City East, and a former Co-President of the
Samuel Goldwyn Foundation Children’s Center Parent Advisory League. In addition to the
Planning Commission, she also serves as a Walk and Roller Committee Member at El Marino
Language School.

A committed environmentalist, Barba serves as a Sierra Club Angeles Chapter Executive
Committee member, and a West LA Sierra Club Chapter management group member.
